Research Portfolio

 Primary Research

UEA PDP Corporate Video Questionnaire

This questionnaire is a good example of primary research as Misha and I created this survey ourselves and collected the responses ourselves. We know that our information is up to date and accurate because we know who we sent the survey to and when we sent it out.

We can see the information directly from the people who filled it out, which is an advantage over secondary research where responses may have been reworded, rephrased or summarised. This also gives us unbiased information as we haven't excluded any responses or tried to present it to support a specific point.

Secondary Research

This is an example of secondary research, where I have used information from sources such as the Unilever website to collect information. This was important for learning about the brand and product in order to choose a brand for my pitch. This is a good example because I used information collected by someone else to complete my research.

This is my analysis of PG Tips. This is another great example of secondary research where I have used information from the PG Tips Website, Wikipedia and other sources to collate research. It helped me to understand the brand and the target audience and look at the elements within the PG Tips advert. Using secondary research allowed me to find a wide variety of information and see what many people think of the brand, rather than just a small group, like in primary research such as a survey sent to 30 people.

This research is secondary research that I did to collect information for creating a corporate video for East Norfolk Sixth Form College. This is a good example because by looking at already presented information on the college sites, this allowed us to know what values East Norfolk has and what to present in our video in order to attract as many students as possible. We know that our information is correct as it is on the official websites and is up to date because of the constant changes and news within the colleges.

Quantitative Research
Our questionnaire for our corporate video allowed us to see the number of people who enjoyed our video and their ratings for elements such as visual quality. This is a good example of quantitative research as we collected numerical results which meant that we were able to make graphs from our data to draw conclusions. This helped us to quickly see the opinions about and effects of our video to our audience.

Qualitative Research

This survey also allowed us to collect detailed responses and reasons for the opinions on our video. We could see a variety of opinions and discover the recurring responses to see the most common comments. This is a good example of qualitative data as it allows us to have personal responses that we can use to make assumptions about how our target audience will respond to our video and make necessary improvements from this research.

Production Research

Here is our preproduction work from our TV advert for Magnum. This is a good example of production research because we had to do research such as budgeting sheets, risk assessments and location recces to collect the information needed to complete our production.
In order to complete this, we had to research people - our talents - by collecting information such as age, parent's name, address and phone number. This information is needed for legal reasons and to collect contact details of the talents. We also had to research locations that we wanted to film in, to collect information such as availability (what times/days we could use the location), address and contact details. This information is useful for being organised, making any arrangements beforehand such as parking and choosing the best location for what we need to film. We also had to research potential risks that there could be whilst filming, in order to complete the risk assessment. This is all important production research because it is essential for the production to be well planned and successfully carried out.

UEA Permission:

Here is the permission that we got for the photos that we included in our UEA PDP corporate video. We contacted the marketing team at East Norfolk, who contacted the UEA on our behalf to get permission to include photos of the UEA in our video. They responded with 6 images that we could use and we included 3 of these in our final video.

Market/Audience Research

PG Tips rebranding pitch:
This is a good example of audience and market research because I collected and presented information on the PG Tips brand and the characteristics of their audience to create this presentation. By looking on websites such as the PG Tips website, I was able to learn about the primary and secondary audience and the rival tea brands. This was important for understanding the PG Tips brand and representation in order to rebrand it well, in an informed way.

East Norfolk Research:
This is a good example of market research because I researched East Norfolk Sixth Form College and it's rival college East Coast College, in order to see the similarities and differences between two colleges that are marketed to people in our area. I could understand what is being promoted to the students and how the colleges are presenting themselves. This also helped me to understand the target audience by looking at what about these colleges makes students go there and understanding the key values of the colleges.
